Black Crowes History - A visit to Red Rocks

In the history of the Black Crowes there really is no scared ground that defines the band. No must visit places in the band's history. Much like many of us in the 90s and 00s, they are rootless...on the road in search of the song...without a home... Sadly in recent Crowes history there is one place that that has become infamous, if only in hindsight. The August 12, 2006, show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, started out like many others on the 2006 Summer tour. They opened with Waitin' Guilty and ended the encore with Space Captain. By all reports it was a pretty good show. However, in retrospect it turns out that it was a very important day in Crowes history...the last show by the "New Classic" lineup...the last show with Marc Ford on guitar and Ed Harsch on keys. The new lineup has played some great shows this summer, but even on its best day, it can't reach the stratosphere that the band could with Marc and Ed. It has never been clear to me if on the day of the show Marc, Ed, Chris, or Rich new about what lay ahead, but it is ironic that they ended their last show with Ed playing Space Captain.

I was in Colorado last week, so I visited Red Rocks. It must be the perfect place to see a rock show... A beautiful natural venue with a view of downtown Denver in the distance. I stood at the rail, listed to Descending on the iPod and remembered back to how the band sounded in 2005 and 2006. That being said...you can never say never with this band...maybe someday Ed and Marc will be back...who knows...

On stage, but not a rock star...

OK, have to ask. What were you doing in CO?
